Plus One is a Lucky Number

I'm absolutely thrilled to welcome Teresa Morgan to my blog today. Teresa is a member of the Bath & Wilts RNA Chapter - we meet every six weeks or so for luscious food and fun at The Sign of the Angel in the historic village of Lacock. Our last meeting included a celebration of Teresa's debut book, Plus One Is a Lucky Number and she's here today to tell us all about it.

Hi, Liz, thank you so much for inviting me on to your blog! This is so exciting. (Tries not to have a fan girl moment).

What is your genre? Why did you choose to write it?
I thought my book was more ‘contemporary romance’, however Harper Impulse have put it into their Rom Com section as they say my book is more chick-lit. I have been reassured that my book does have a gentle humour throughout it, as I was scared it wasn’t funny enough to be classed as a Rom Com lol! I thought it was funny, but I’m not sure how good it is to laugh at your own jokes.

I’m not sure why I chose to write that genre, I suppose I just write what comes naturally to me.

Tell us about your writing journey – and the Call.
A fellow writer in our (as you’re in it too :D) RNA chapter group had announced she’d been accepted by Harper Impulse. When I checked out their website I realised they were really new and thought ‘grab the bull by the horns’ and sent out my first novel. A few weeks later there’s an email in my inbox! They wanted to phone me, but I had four boys (two weren’t mine) in the house and I knew if the telephone rang all hell would break loose, so I was offered a two book contract with Harper Impulse via email, and I’m still pinching myself. I might frame that email.

Tell us about your debut book.
Plus One is a Lucky Number is about a young woman who has a wedding to attend but no ‘plus one’ to take with her. Returning home means facing her past and she’s not quite sure she wants to do it on her own. Her friend, who is also her work colleague, convinces his best mate Adam to go with Sophie. With all the pretending – they never discussed kissing! - Sophie starts wishing it was real. The weekend holds a few surprises in store for Adam, too.

Do you listen to music while you write? Have any favourite snacks to keep you going?
When I’m writing or editing I need complete silence. No TV or radio. I like it quiet while reading too. I have been known to have chocolate to hand though... However, lyrics from songs can inspire scenes in my head, so when I’m not writing, I love the radio on.

Give us the blurb!

Sophie’s going to a wedding where the invite is strictly plus one… but with her single girl status not exactly fitting in with the bridesmaid dress code, and the best man being none other than the ex she would rather forget, Sophie needs a date and she needs one fast!

Luckily for Sophie, her dreamy but distant co-worker Adam Reid owes their mutual friend James big time…and his gorgeousness more than fills the role of the ‘Perfect Boyfriend’!

As they take off to the sunny shores of Cornwall for the wedding weekend, it’s not long before pretence leads to passion and Sophie and Adam must decide; is their relationship real or is it all for show?

Thanks everyone for taking part - I'm stunned at your ingenuity!

I'm off to put the last few thousand words to Total Exposure (working title) the book I'm working on now - my pinboard is very much a work in progress but here's a link

Another rainy Sunday...

I think we're about to get another "rain" day, so the latest lot of plants will be staying in their pots. The bee hotel being built by the "best beloved" is coming along, though.

And this is his latest gardening project.

Beaumont Brides Special Offer

I've been neglecting the blog lately because I'm really pushing towards the end of the book, but the Beaumont Brides trilogy is really cheap at Amazon this week (.99c in the US and the equivalent everywhere else). It's only going to be available at this price for the weekend, so go grab it!

Yes - that's all three books!

Go, go, go...

This link will take you to Amazon where ever you are.

At his command...Whatever he needs... The Nanny

Jacqui Moore is on the run - from her emotions - until she meets little orphaned Maisie and is railroaded into becoming her nanny! But the master of the house, Harry Talbot, also steals Jacqui's heart. And now there's nowhere to run...

Feisty redhead Prudence Winslow is down to her last cent when she meets Ryan Kaelan, a real-life prince, and his motherless children who need her. Pru takes the job, thinking it wBasn't Ryan's jaw-dropping sexiness that convinced her...

Max Saunders is shocked to discover he has twin sons. He needs a nanny; Phoebe Gilbert doesn't relish the thought of living with Max, but the boys want her! Max thinks Phoebe could be a convenient wife. Will she marry him for the twins...?

It's always fun to see a favourite book re-issued. This one is my "Jack & the Beanstalk" story, with Maisie, a gorgeous little diva, driving the plot.

It's available from this weekend, retail, at Mills and Boon and at Amazon - both in paper and as an eBook download.

Movie Casting

Today my guest is Nina Harrington, who writes contemporary romance for Kiss and Modern Tempted and has just added crime (with tons of romance) to her oeuvre!

Welcome, Nina...

One of the delights of creating romantic fiction is exploring how your fictional hero can encapsulate all of the qualities you are looking for in your ideal man.

Is he dark, fair, tall or stocky? Perhaps he is an adventurer, a cowboy or a sheik, sinewy and athletic, or a powerful company executive resplendent in designer suits with a private jet on standby to whisk your away to a tropical island?

And then you have to create a heroine which will match your hero and make him work past the instant attraction to recognise the one woman he needs more than he wants.

But now it is time to let you into a secret many romance authors share. A passion which involves “inspirational” head and body photos of celebrities, actors, sportsmen and women from TV, stage and most of all cinema

Yes. I am talking about movie casting!

Do you create visual impressions of the characters as you read a book? I do.

And how often are you disappointed when that book is filmed and the actor is nothing like the person you had imagined?

Who would you chose to play the parts of your hero and heroine in the movie of the book that you are reading or writing?

I had such fun choosing actors to play in my romantic mystery set in an Italian delicatessen.

Recipe for Disaster’ is a fun contemporary romance with a feisty Irish-Italian heroine and a hot Italian bad boy lawyer. Not much in common – except their love of good food.
